Here Comes the Bride
Choosing who would walk you down the aisle used to be a relatively simple task. If not your father, the task usually then fell to an older male relative or friend.
Today, the choices are many, even for a traditional wedding. Choices such as a mother who raised you single-handedly, a stepfather with whom you have a close relationship, an adoptive father you love. There is also the choice of just walking down the aisle by yourself, or with your fiancé. With so many options, how does the modern bride choose?
A personal decision based on life experiences, no one can say for certain what the right answer is, but here are a number of thoughts that might make it easier to decide.
Having both your mother and your father walk you down the aisle pays homage to the very important role that mother's have always played in their daughter's journey to becoming an independent woman.
If independence is important to you, you might choose to walk halfway down the aisle, with your chosen escort, and walk the rest of the way yourself, showing a symbolic transfer from dependence to independence.
A twist on this walk down the aisle is to have the groom meet the bride halfway, symbolizing that they are walking the rest of this journey into marriage together. Some brides are even choosing to part with tradition altogether, and walk the entire way down the aisle arm in arm with their groom. Symbolizing your commitment and partnership, right from the beginning.
In weddings where there are children involved, you might want the children to walk down the aisle with you. Less a symbol of being given away, it is more a symbol of the joining, not just of the bride and groom as a couple, but of the children with the couple as a family.
