Here Comes the Groom's Cake
A Groom's Cake is an old tradition originating from the south that is beginning to see a resurgence amongst Bride's eager to provide something personal for their groom. Traditionally Groom's Cakes were fruit or chocolate cakes served near the end of the evening, or cut up and served as favours for guests to take home. Legend had it that if a single female guest placed a piece of Groom's Cake underneath her pillow she would then dream of the man she would one day marry.
Today's Groom's Cakes are less about the superstition and more about the Groom. Made in a style and flavour favoured by him, the modern day Groom's cake is one that is served either the night before at the rehearsal dinner, as an alternate dessert to the wedding cake, or alongside a midnight buffet.
Most Groom's Cakes also try to be a reflection of the Groom's interests, hobbies or favourite sports, through it's shape, it's iced decorations, or through a unique cake topper. A Groom cake, whether created by the Groom's direction or a surprise gift from his soon-to-be Bride, is a chance for all guests to see the Groom's personality shine.
If once cut, the cake is to be boxed up and sent home as favours for guests, there are several creative options to see this particular task gets done.
One such option is to make small favour boxes available surrounding the cake for guests to fill if they so desire, (Note: a small sign or announcement notifying guests of this arrangement and of the cake's legend is a good way to ensure that this is done). Another is to pre-box the bottom tier of a 2-tier cake for guests to take with them, leaving the top tier for guests to enjoy at the reception. Why not stack the boxes uniformly on a cake server, so that the boxes themselves take on the appearance of a cake. You can do away with cake altogether and create a tiered creation of petit fours that guests can select and box up to take with them.
Whichever option you choose, make sure you let the Groom make the final decision, after all, it is his cake.
