Wedding Veils Revealed

Bridal veils are one of many wedding accessories that are rich in tradition. Some say the custom of wearing a wedding veil stems from the belief that bad luck will follow if the groom should see his bride before the wedding. Others insist that veiling the bride is a symbolic way of tantalizing the groom by concealing her beauty until he becomes her husband and is permitted to see her. Whatever reason you choose to wear a veil, there are many factors that need to be taken into account before you choose one.

There are four main types of veils. The blusher, a shoulder length veil that is worn over the face and combined with other veil lengths for both formal and informal weddings. An elbow length veil, which is traditionally the most worn of all other veils combined, is around 30" in length. A fingertip veil that is combined with a blusher veil, around 36" in length, and the longest of wedding veils. The cathedral veil which is used only for formal weddings and is typically 120" in length and generally extends onto the floor at least six inches past the train.

Whichever length of veil you choose, a number of factors must be taken into account before you choose the veil for you, including your height, the length of your dress, the details of your dress and the hairstyle that will be worn.

Veils should be worn to match the length and style of dress, the longer the dress, the longer the veil can be. But, if your dress consists of some sort of focal point, the veil should fall just slightly above or below it, never right at the focal point.

There are also different colors of veils, including white, diamond white, champagne and ivory. Remember to bring your veil with you when attending a wedding dress fitting to ensure the best color, fit and length.

An accessory rich in tradition, a veil chosen correctly can be the perfect finishing touch to the perfect dress.
