Anchors Away

Whether you live by a beach or just plain love the water and all things associated with it, planning a nautical themed wedding provides you with an amazing color palette and a host of ideas with which to work.

While blue is of course a logical choice to begin with, the range of blues you can choose from is as vast as the ocean itself. Cerulean, Aqua, Azure, Mediterranean, the list of blues goes on and on, paired with white it makes for a calm and soothing atmosphere.

To jazz it up a bit, choose a complimentary color, such as a vibrant red, as in the typical nautical colors of old, a sunshine yellow to bring in the bold, bright color of the sun or a smooth and silky aqua green for a sensuous touch of elegance.

For favors and wedding decorations a number of options await, from small boats filled with mint "life-savers" to sea shell or sailboat styled candles or other nautical shapes and symbols made out of chocolate.

To decorate your nautical themed wedding, start with your location. Choose a yacht, a yacht club or a lighthouse. For the more land locked, you might want to seek out your nearest body of water, be it a crystal blue lake or a winding river and see if there is a large tourist-styled boat available to ferry your guests around. At the very least you may be able to find a large canoe or dragon boat that will whisk you and your beloved away from your ceremony to travel along the water and bring you to your reception venue.

A love for the water doesn't mean that you have to live near a beach, be married by the captain of a ship or wear jaunty sailor caps in the traditional red, white and blue. It means incorporating that love into the theme that best suits your surroundings and personality. Go nautical in your own way and anchors away!
