Follow the Light

Everyone knows the challenge it can be to organize family and attendants for wedding photographs on your wedding day. Young attendants whose attention span is short and groomsmen's whose might be even shorter, make it difficult to give the time and attention necessary to capture the emotion experienced when it comes time to take your own wedding portraits.

While one solution is to take the photographs before the wedding, for those invested in the rule about not seeing the bride or groom before the ceremony, there is still another option: taking your wedding portraits the day after the ceremony.

Commonly referred to as a Following the Light photo session, such sessions commonly entail engaging a photographer from sunup to sundown to capture unique and interesting shots of the bridal couple in a variety of interesting locals. While some couples may choose to couple this option with a trash the dress event, many will just plan to spend the day enjoying each other's company, revelling in their newly married status.

If this is an option you and your intended are contemplating, it is wise when sitting with your photographer prior to the wedding to come up with a list of potential photograph locations, and to devise what time of day the best light would be to take those particular wedding shots. It is also a good idea at this pre-planning session to contemplate what props, favors or wedding accessories you might want to include in the photographs.

A separate photo session like this is the perfect time to visit locations such as museums (which will be more likely allow you onto the premises during regular business hours without an accompanying entourage), shopping centers, malls, bowling alleys, playgrounds, amusement parks, even grocery stores, allowing you to have fun, a perfect way to unwind after the chaos that can accompany the planning of a wedding.

If you're looking for a fun way to create one-of-a-kind wedding portraits, look to a Follow the Light post-wedding photo session and create memories and photos that will last a lifetime.
