The Anniversary Dance

Traditionally the bride's bouquet has always been tossed to a group of single female wedding guests who assemble to determine who will be next in line to be married. A new twist on this old tradition is the bouquet or anniversary dance.

Engaging the services of your DJ or Master of Ceremonies, all of your married guests would be invited to take to the dance floor for a few minutes of dancing before they were interrupted, and asked to depart the floor if they had been married five years or less. A system that continues in increments with couples exiting the dance floor systematically until the moment when the dance floor is left to only one couple, the couple that had been married the longest. At that point the bride and groom would then approach the couple and present them with the bride's bouquet in honor of their longevity, a longevity they hope to one day emulate.

Depending on the number of guests in attendance, it is the professional DJ who will consult with the bride and groom, or other guests as to who might be the last couple standing in order to best prepare his music to coincide.

If he is particularly up on his game, he might also play some music from the era that the couple were married in, and do a short introduction/interview of the couple, asking them their names, their relation to the bridal couple, and words of wisdom they might pass onto the bride and groom.

If the bride has other plans for her bouquet, but enjoys the idea of this new tradition it can still be done using a specially prepared wedding favor or other wedding accessory (such as the head table centerpiece) that the bride and groom present instead of the bouquet. Not only does this allow the bride to keep her bouquet, it can also honor both members of the couple with a small token or gift.

A feel-good tradition that honors those who have trod the path of marriage before you, the Anniversary dance is also a way to picture yourself in the future, when you too will be the last couple dancing.
